Don't Click Here

January 21st, 2011 by admin

Please stop!  The reign of "click here" ended quite a few years ago.  Not only is it cliché and dated but also assumptive; there are many, many other interface possibilities ranging from screen readers or other adaptive technologies for the disabled to the ever popular and constantly underestimated keyboard.  It is semantic garbage if the content is processed in any way, and doesn't aid in indexing or give any clue, from the tag itself, what lies beyond.  It is media specific (looks dumb when printed) and as mentioned above, device specific.

The worst of it is, there is almost always a really easy of communicating your intent better.  Take a look at what W3.org (the WWW Consortium, the international community devoted to Web Standards) has to say.
