Why Shouldn't You Buy an Email Marketing List?

April 18th, 2016 by admin

Buying a list of email addresses is a waste of money, time and effort.

Ok, Ok, that was a little blunt, but if you take nothing else from this article at least remember that much. The truth is there are many more reasons you should cultivate your own email list instead of purchasing one.

  • Open Rate
The typical open rate for B2B email marketing communications is about 20%. This number is dramatically reduced when the list is comprised of users that have no idea who you are or how you got their information.
  • Reputation
Purchased email lists regularly contain "honeypot" addresses which will identify spammers and add them to known SPAM databases. This kind of bad reputation can harm your company image as well as overall email deliverability.
  • Restrictions
Most reputable email marketing companies will not send to purchased email lists for the reasons above, so you may not even be able to use the list you have bought.

Instead of wasting money on a bought list you should try marketing to your existing customers or use opt-in incentives on your website to get your users to willingly sign up for your email marketing.
